History

A History Of Father Ben Powers Council

It is with deep gratitude that we thank Mrs. Kathryn T. Garrison, 1300 Edgewood Avenue, Bowling Green, Kentucky, archivist for the St. Joseph Catholic Church, for her valuable contribution relating to this history. To Properly understand and appreciate the spirit which inspired the creation of Council 1315 one must first understand the birth of that spirit.

It is the same spirit which caused the building of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bowling Green, Kentucky. It is therefore proper that this history should begin with the birth of the founding Pastor, Father Joseph DeVries, born June 30, 1851 in the village Gerwen in the hamlet Het Laar and forms with the villages Nuenen and Nederwebben, Holland.

Joseph’s parents, John DeVries and Petronella Verhagen, lived on a farm in the hamlet Het Laar. They were married on the 25th of April 1826 in the parish church of Gerwen; a amall but beautiful church dating from the middle ages, and devoted to St. Clemens, Pope and Martyr. John was a carpenter of 28 years, while Petronella was a merchants daughter of 19 years. John was evidently one of the most distinguished citizens, because his service as a member of the Council of the Commune Nuenent Nederwebben and Gerwen eventually led to his nomination for the office of burgomaster (mayor) of that Commune on 1 January 1850. He was therefore forced to leave his parish at Gerwen and take up residence at Nuenen. It was there he died on 1 October 1860, having been preceded in death by his wife on 11 September 1852. Their marriage was blessed with 14 children, who were all born in Gerwen, Holland; except the youngest, Martin, who was born in Liuenen. Their third child was Joseph, who was baptized on 1 July 1831, one day after his birth, in the parish church of Gerwen.

From his early youth Joseph showed unmistakable signs of a vocation for the Priesthood. In 1843 he was enrolled as a student at the Low Seminary of St. Michael – Gesbel. In 1845 he moved to the Schola Labina at Germat – situated about 12.5 kilometers from Gewen – where he completed his studies. In 1848 he returned to the Seminary St. Michael’s – Gesbel for further studies. And on September 25, 1850 he moved to the High Seminary of Haaren for his studies of philosophy and theology, which he completed in 1853.

About this time, Arch-bishop Martin John Spalding – then Bishop of Louisville, Kentucky – decided that his only hope of providing sufficient priests for the undeveloped Kentucky missions would be to secure young men from the European seminaries. With this idea in mind he crossed the Atlantic and visited several seminaries in France, Belgium and Holland. It was during these travels that Bishop Spalding went to the High Seminary of Haaren. Young Joseph DeVries was full of apostolic zeal. And after consulting the president of the seminary – a near relative of his father – he offered himself to Bishop Spalding.

His parents gave their permission for Joseph to leave, as they were reluctant to oppose him in his pious desires. Joseph then prepared himself for the long and perilous voyage. And on April 18, 1853 he said goodbye to his family and friends. A few days later on April 25, 1853, and in company with Rt. Rev. Bishop Spalding, his Vicar General, he sailed for America from Havre, France on one of the first transatlantic steamers. Also accompanying them were eight other volunteers from Bishop Spalding’s visits to several seminaries in France, Belgium and Holland. They were Fathers Michael Bouchet, Bekkers, Luytelaar, Wuyts, Van Deutekom, Chazel, Van Emstrede and Bax. The party reached New York in twelve days; fast time for those days. From New York they travelled to Cincinnati, where Archbishop Purcell received them and acted as their host during a few days’ visit in that city.

On may 18, 1853 Joseph DeVries was sent by the Very Reverend Martin John Spalding to St. Thomas’ Seminary to complete his theological studies and to learn English. On the 14th of July 1855, he was ordained a Deacon. And one day later, at the age of 24, he was ordained to the Priesthood.

Father DeVries’ first mission in Kentucky was at New Haven, Hodgensville, and the missions attended by the Rev. Robert Abel, who was in declining health. Father DeVries soon was entrusted with the missions outside of New Haven. He built a church in Hodgensville, and traveled all over that section of the country between Larue and Simpson counties, and as far as the Tennessee line. Finding Catholics scattered everywhere in his travels, he thought that Bowling Green, the Warren County seat, was the best place to locate the center of his mission. With the approval of the Ordinary, he took up his residence in Bowling Green in 1859. He immediately began preparations to build a church. A suitable church site was generously donated by Mr. Euclid Covington, a member of a prominent Warren County family, and a Protestant gentleman. Mr. Euclid Covington and Father DeVries became close friends during the years to follow.

Catholics in the Bowling Green area were few and poor. And it was not an easy matter to collect the funds necessary for the building of a brick church in a country where the people had scarcely ever met a Catholic priest. Father DeVries received a great deal of help in his work from the non-Catholic citizens of Bowling Green who regarded him highly as a Christian minister and a man.

Early in 1859, construction of a primitive log building was completed. It was to serve as a school during the week, and on Sundays it was fitted with an altar for Mass. It was to serve the Catholic community while a proper brick church was being built. Construction of the brick St. Joseph’s church was started immediately – in mid 1859 – and was under roof and sufficiently finished so that Mass was held there for the first time on Easter Sunday, April 8, 1860. After that the little frame building measuring 25′ X 30′ served as a school and for Catechism classes. Around 1910 it was moved to a spot just behind the convent home for the Sisters of Charity. It was covered with clapboard, embellished with exterior trim and the interior partitioned into small rooms. In this way it was used as the Music Building for St. Joseph School for many years, and for temporary classrooms in the 1950’s when the High School grades were being added to the elementary school.

After the new building was erected in 1961 to house the High School and gymnasium, the little

“White House” as it was called then, was used for the lesser important purposes of storage, rummage sales, etc. It was badly damaged by fire in 1974. And since its size and location made it unsuitable for the large meeting room needed for parish functions, it was decided to raze the building rather than to repair it. Before it was demolished in late 1974, the small Victorian canopy that had been added over the front door at the time the building was moved from its original site, was preserved and installed over the south Sacristy entrance of the present church. The contractor for razing the building, Thomas C. Brosche, was awarded the old lumber framing; and a square nail from this first St. Joseph’s church was given as a memento to each member of the parish by the then pastor, Father Lucian P. Hayden.

Father DeVries lived a harsh life in Bowling Green while he struggled to build the first permanent brick Catholic Church there. This was a most difficult time in history. The Civil War between the North and South had not yet begun; work was scarce, and wages very small. Father DeVries suffered untold hardships to serve the Catholic families who resided from Elizabethtown to the Tennessee line. This was his mission territory which he served and loved so greatly.

When the Civil War began Father DeVries ministered to the wants of both the Federal and Confederate soldiers who alternately entered the town of Bowling Green. When a fierce battle took place at the very edge of the city, the few Catholic residents suffered greatly. Father DeVries himself was drafted into the army; but through the influence of friends he was made a chaplain of the Fort around Bowling Green.

It was not until 1862 that St. Joseph Church was dedicated by the Rev. P. J. Lavialle, who later became Bishop of Louisville. The Catholics who had been working on the L & N Railroad settled down in Bowling Green, and before long there was a fair little congregation of Irish and Germans gathered in the little church. Father DeVries, seeing the necessity of Catholic education and training of the children, applied to the motherhouse of the Sisters of Nazareth and succeeded in obtaining a colony of Sisters who opened a school on their own property in 1867. There they operated St. Columba Academy, the alma mater of many distinguished residents of Bowling Green and vicinity; Protestants as well as Catholic.

Father DeVries had until now been boarding with one of his parishioners, as he was too poor to build a residence for himself. He eventually decided the time had come to build a suitable pastor’s rectory. So he introduced plans for the construction of the present parochial residence. The church was not entirely free of debt, and the outlay for the house added considerably to the already existing indebtedness. But in 1870 the congregation had greatly increased in number, and he undertook to lay the foundation of the present beautiful Gothic structure. He and the congregation labored under considerable financial difficulties. In 1884, after a long and hard struggle, he was able to complete the beautiful structure. The congregation continued to grow so rapidly that the third and present addition to the church was completed and dedicated in 1889.

Fr. DeVries very happy and pleased with the beautiful church filled with devout worshipers – his spiritual children. He was in the best of health, and to all appearances, was to enjoy many years in peace and quiet amid the fruits of his labors. But God decreed otherwise. He was suddenly called

to his reward on the 10th of August 1889 after celebrating the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. He was 58 years and 10 days of age. Providentially a priest called at the house in time to administer the last sacraments to the dying priest. His work will stand for generations to come as a monument to Father DeVries.

Mere words of eulogy fall well short of stating the true worth and priestly character of the good Father DeVries, and the tears of his loving Parishioners speak louder than words of praise. A large number of priests came from far-and-wide to pay their tribute of respect. Due to the large number of mourners who came, the the Mayor requested that all businesses close out of respect for Fr. DeVries. He was in truth a missionary priest whose heart was in his work, and his interest in his flock. “Well done thou good and faithful servant”.

Father Thomas J. Hayes succeeded Father Joseph DeVries on August 14, 1889. And St. Joseph Church received many embellishments under his tasteful management. A fine pipe organ was installed, the rectors rebuilt, concrete walks were laid around the church property and many other substantial improvements were made. In 1910 Father Hayes purchased the lot adjoining the church property on which he erected the St. Joseph Parochial School and constructed a neat Convent home for the teaching Sisters.

Mrs. Margaret Martine Hartig Fisher, 802 Covington Avenue, Bowling Green, Kentucky is credited for her valuable contribution to the history of Martin J. DeVries, who was her grandfather and the first Grand Knight of Council 1315.

Martin J. DeVries was born in 1854 at Nuenen, Holland; the fourteenth child of John DeVries and Petronella Verhagen DeVries. Martin died May 16, 1918 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He is buried in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, grave Section Mass 4, Row F. Lot 40, Grave site 6 in Lot 40.

It is not known when Martin DeVries left Holland or why he was in Illinois when a terrible tragedy occurred. Martin was married to a lady by the name of Swineheart. They had one daughter, Nell Josephine DeVries. Mrs. DeVries died in an attempt to give birth to their second child; a son who lived for six months after this birth.

After the loss of his wife and his son, Martin J. DeVries moved to Bowling Green, Kentucky to be near his family consisting of Father Joseph DeVries, Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, another older brother Frank DeVries and his wife Margaret, and his older sister Margaret, who was unmarried and owner of a millinery store in Bowling Green. Margaret was noted for her design and production of ladies hats. She also helped Martin rear his daughter, Nell Josephine DeVries, who in later life married Nichols A. Hartig. Their daughter Margaret Martine Hartig Fisher of Bowling Green is credited with furnishing the preceding information about her grandfather, Martin J. DeVries.

Nichols A. Hartig was a charter member of Council 1315. He was elected Grand Knight in 1915, 1920 and 1941. In 1926 he was honored by his appointment to the position of District Deputy.

During his many years of service to Council 1315 it is worthy to note that he was the Council Treasurer for many years.

Little information is known about Martin J. DeVries’ brother, Frank. But some information was obtained from his and his wife’s grave markers in St. Joseph Cemetery. Frank was born in 1844 and died October 30, 1925. His wife Margaret died December 19, 1921. Their grave location is Map 4, Row F, Lot 31 and Grave 3.

Martin J. DeVries was a baker, and his bakery was located on lower Main Street. The bakery building was demolished in 1987 to create space for a modern structure. His building had a large sign on the front which read “DeVries Bakery”. At his bakery you were treated with a donut and coffee for 5 cents, and unending conversation.

Martin was the First Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 1315, Bowling Green, Kentucky, which was chartered on April 26, 1908. It is proper to note a word of praise for Martin

J. DeVries which appeared in the celebration book “Golden Jubilee Edition” when the Kentucky State Council held their convention in Bowling Green to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Council 1315:

“For many years previous to 1908, it was evident that St. Joseph Parish of Bowling Green needed a unified and patriotic organization of Catholic men. This need was made easier by the late Martin

J. DeVries, whose ability as an organizer was well known. Mr. DeVries consulted with many members of Saint Joseph’s Church, and with the assistance of the late Mr. John Donovan, State Deputy of Paducah, Kentucky brought together Bowling Green Council 1315 Knights of Columbus.

On Sunday April 26, 1908 approximately sixty candidates were initiated. Delegations from a number of Kentucky Knights of Columbus Councils were present at the ceremonies. Among them was the late venerated and beloved Pastor of Saint Joseph’s Church, Rev. Thomas. J. Hayes, who welcomed this infant Council 1315 as a valuable addition to his Parish organization. It never failed him and always responded lovingly to his every wish.

Mr. Martin J. DeVries was a brother of the late Rev. Joseph DeVries, a pioneer Kentucky Priest who established Saint Joseph’s Parish and built the present Church and was its Pastor until his death on August 10, 1889. Mr. Martin J. DeVries will always be remembered as the Father of the Knights of Columbus Council 1315, Bowling Green, Kentucky.”

The following highlights of Council 1315 meeting minutes and activities are listed to further expand the history of Father Ben Bowers Council 1315, Bowling Green, Kentucky.

The first Council 1315 meeting hall was located at 800 Main Street in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The earliest minutes of the Council meetings begins in the year of 1916, while the Council was chartered on April 26, 1908. But the minutes from that date until June, 1916 were destroyed in a fire which occurred on May 31, 1953 in the second Council hall which was located on 10th Street.

February 15, 1992 Address by Ray Grudzielanek, Columbus Club President

Reverend Fathers, State Officers, Worthy Grand Knight, Brother Knights, and ladies. My topic is a brief history of Council 1315. The Council was chartered April 26, 1908. Meetings were held above the George T. Massey Grocery Store located in the 100 block of Main Street.

In the 1930’s meetings were held on the 2nd floor above the Martin DeVries Grocery Store.

In the early 1940’s the Council purchased the old Ray Price Building and part of the building was destroyed by fire.

The Council then purchased an old chicken hatchery. A two-story building at 932 Center Street. The membership spent many hours cleaning and renovating the new Council home.

In 1952 the Council formed the Columbus Club and elected Joe Durbin the first president. Tommy Diemer was the second president of the Columbus Club. In 1974 the loan on the building was paid and a mortage burning party was held.

Ray Grudzielanek was elected president of the Columbus Club following Tommy Diemer.

The building on Center Street was found to be structurely unsound, and the membership voted to sell the building in 1977 for $18,000.

Membership meetings and social activities were then held at St. Joseph and Holy Spirit church facitlities.

The membership voted to have bingo as a fund raising activity. Bingo became a way of life on July 12th, 1982 at St. Joseph gumnasium under the leadership of Dale Jakel, with various committees and many volunteers. Income from bingo was building a sizeable bank account and the membership was eagerly looking for a new Council home.

At the November 11, 1986 meeting, the membership voted to purchase Lot 32 on Search Way. On January 13, 1987 the membership approved the construction of this facility.

A building committee was appointed, with Jerry Kaelin, Chairman. Dale Jakel, Mark Kreyembuhl, Burt Pinkstaff and Jim Signorello.

On March 10, 1987 the membership approved a loan of $100,000. Ground breaking ceremonies were held on Sunday April 26, 1987.

The building commmittee obtained approval to open the building for occupancy and under the leadership of Jerry Frey, the first bingo was held Labor Day, September 7, 1987 with 371 bingo players in attendance.

On September 13th 1988 the membership voted to purchase the adjoining lot for $20,000.

Tonight, less than 5 years from the ground breaking ceremonies, we are celebrating with a mortage burning ceremony.

Fraternally,

Ray Grudzielanek Columbus Club President
